More Chloe Ann
November 15th, 2013
Here are some more photos of the lovely Chloe Ann freezing her cute ass off for my art in this fantastic location in Vermont.
It was December when we did this shoot. I hope I’ll be able to shoot in this spot again some day when it isn’t quite this cold. And maybe there will be more leaves on the trees and it will have a whole different look.
If it were warmer I might even be able to get a model into the water. And there are other lovely spots away from the water that will look very different in the spring or summer. We’ll see…
Chloe Ann in Vermont
November 9th, 2013
Again it has been too long since my last post. I’ve been busy, as usual. I have three photos currently hanging in a show At the Carmel Visual Arts gallery in Carmel, California. One was selected for an honorable mention award. I’m in excellent company in this show, so I’m very pleased with the show and with the award. You can see the show at this link.
Also, on Saturday, November 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. is the opening for the Rated R Show in North Hollywood, California. This also looks to be a fine show, so if you are in the LA area, try to get there for the opening.
So, I’ve been busy printing and framing and shipping. I’ve also been working on prints to go to my gallery in Chicago, Gallery Prov0cateur. Veronika has taken me on for permanent representation by her gallery, so I’ll be delivering a portfolio of prints for her to have on hand to show collectors.
Also, the Kinsey Institute is planning a show in January on the theme “Flora and Fauna.” They were planning to include some of my work that is already in their permanent collection and asked me if I’d like to submit some additional photos for the show. So those are also now printed and will be going over to them soon.
And, with all this going on, my Epson 4900 printer developed a strange anomaly that only affected a few prints. After extensive consultations with a variety of experts and Epson technical support I’ll be getting a replacement printer this week. This will be my third printer in the two years since I bought my 4900. It makes great prints when it’s working, but this has been quite an experience as it has gone through some strange ups and downs.
But I know you’d really rather be reading something about these photos, so let’s get to that. Almost a year ago the wonderful Chloe Ann came to Vermont so we could work together in a fantastic location. Yes, it was cold. It was December in Vermont. If you look close, you can see some traces of snow and ice in these photos.
I first met and worked with Chloe in Maine in the summer of last year. We were both very happy to have the chance to work together again and, as you can see, the results were wonderful. She’s a great model who is beautiful, brave and more than willing to do what it takes to get a fine photo. I hope we’ll be working together more in the future.
Big Discount on Calendars
October 29th, 2013
I was away last week at the beach in South Carolina. The condo there was supposed to have wifi, but it didn’t work. So I wasn’t able to do any of the on-line work I had planned to do while we were there. That would have included several new blog posts. So it goes.
I’ll have more to post in the next few days, but I wanted to get this out there right away because it’s available for a limited time. My publisher is having a really great sale that can save you a bundle on a calendar. So, if you’ve thought you might like to get one of my calendars, this may be the best price you’ll see on them this year. The sale is 40% off the regular price. That makes the price pretty much competitive with the calendars at those pop-up places in the malls. And these are big, beautifully printed calendars with original photos. When the year is over you can chop off the calendar part and frame the photos if you’d like.
The sale is only good until November 4. So don’t put it off too long.
To get the special price, which isn’t mentioned on their web site, just enter the code FALLSALE40 when you check out. You can find the calendars here.
Barbara Nitke at the Kinsey Institute
October 18th, 2013
In the days right before I did the photos of “Rocky Horror (Puppet) Show” I went over to the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Indiana, to see Barbara Nitke give a talk. I often go over for programs that the Kinsey presents, but this was one I especially wanted to attend because Barbara is one of my co-plaintiffs in the 2257 lawsuit that I’ve been involved in since 2009. She testified at the trial in Philadelphia in June, as I did, but we were there at different times and did not meet at the trial. So I went to Kinsey to meet her as well as to hear her presentation.
I got to meet Barbara and chat for a bit before she took the stage to show and talk about her work. We got along well and I hope we will be friends for a long time. She’s a fine person and a great photographer who does interesting and important work.
In her talk Barbara reviewed her career as a photographer which started when she did still photography on the sets of porn films in the 1980s. While shooting the required photos to be used in publicity for the movies, she also did personal work that shows the reality behind the world of porn production. What makes her work so special and important is that it is done without judgement and without an agenda. It is simply insightful, honest documentation of the world that these people worked in. It may tear the curtain a bit, but it does not preach and it does not present these performers as stereotypes. Her work shows you interesting individuals doing a job. As in most workplaces, some of the workers enjoy their work while others are just there to collect a paycheck. And, despite the nature of the work and the sexual excitement represented in the final product, the work of producing the movies is work with all the things that that implies. It is refreshing to see such honest photography done in a subject area that is so often tainted by political agendas determined to ignore any facts that don’t support a particular position regarding pornography.
Barbara’s latest book, American Ecstasy, presents this work in a beautifully printed volume. After her talk and slideshow, Barbara signed copies of the book for the audience.
These events at the Kinsey Institute are among the few places where I see beards that make mine look short.
After the book signing I was invited by my friends at Kinsey to attend an informal gathering at the home of a photography professor from Indiana University. There Barbara chatted with a group of photography students. I met a few of the students also and was impressed by their work and their enthusiasm for the medium.
All in all, a great trip. Good photos, good people and a new friend. It doesn’t get much better than that. The programs that the Kinsey Institute puts on are always excellent, but this was a particularly enjoyable one.
Rocky Horror (Puppet) Show
October 16th, 2013
Last week I was asked to do some photos of the Zoot Theater Company production of “Rocky Horror (Puppet) Show” by my friend and model, Ayn, who is the costume designer for the show. The show runs through Nov. 2 at the Dayton Art Institute. I thought I’d share a few of the photos with you.
Spread in French PHOTO
October 8th, 2013
Last week the good folks at French PHOTO magazine wrote to let me know that they had decided to run a two-page spread about me and my work in the issue of the magazine that hit the newsstands yesterday. I didn’t know what photos they had chosen or what the pages were going to look like, but they promised to send the spread to me as soon as the magazine was officially published so I wouldn’t have to wait the two to three months it takes for the magazine to arrive in the US.
The spread arrived this morning. That’s it above. You can click on it to view it larger. I really don’t know how I could be more pleased. French PHOTO has published my work many times over the years. They’ve been doing that so long that when I originally started submitting my work to them I had to do it by sending prints through snail mail to France. The process is a lot easier these days. And, for some unknown reason, they really seem to like my work over there.
About a year ago the magazine contacted me and invited me to have my work in a new on-line store they were starting. I’m usually hesitant to sell prints of my work in that manner and have declined to do that on websites in the US. But this was French PHOTO, a magazine that many consider to be the best general circulation photo magazine in the world. And it would make my work more easily available to people in Europe who might want to own a print. So, after quite a bit of debate, I decided to accept the offer and sent them a selection of my work. It is now in their store and this spread in the magazine is intended to promote the store and the sale of my photos through it.
I’m really quite pleased and proud of this new development. You probably recognize the wonderful models who made these photos possible, Brooke Lynne and Kat. My thanks go out to them for making these photos possible.
It’s Calendar Time
October 4th, 2013
The end of the year is coming and once again I’ve published some calendars for the coming year. My 2014 calendars are available directly from my publisher here.
And there’s some good news this year. My publisher has reduced the cost of the calendars quite a bit. I am able to pass that savings along to you with prices on the calendars that are much lower than they were last year.
And, more good news. There’s a sale on right now at my publisher. Use the code FCB18 when you check out and you’ll get an additional 18 percent off the price of the calendars. That makes them an even better deal.
And, of course, these calendars are a great way to get a collection of my photos at a great price. There are three calendars to chose from this year.
One of my favorite models is Brooke Lynne. I’ve made a calendar featuring some of the fine photos we’ve made together over the years we’ve been working together:
Another of my favorite models is Kelsey Dylan. She has her own calendar this year too:
And I’ve also updated my Figure in Nature calendar with some new, recent photos added to the collection of “greatest hits”:
I’ve added links to the calendar publisher website in the little column to the right. You can always just click there to go directly to my on-line store at my publisher.
Tall Dancing
September 29th, 2013
When I retired from the day job some years ago, one of the things I started doing that I hadn’t been able to do when I had to report to work every day, was to start photographing dance again. I fell in love with dance and dance photography way back when I was a freshman at Ohio University a long, long time ago. So, I went back to the OU School of Dance and they graciously allowed me to again photograph their productions.
I’ve now reached a point in life where, once again, I find myself unable to make the commitment of time and energy that it takes to properly photograph a dance production. But, over the years of shooting those productions I have fortunately made a few friends. And every once in a while some of them will drop by my studio for some photos. As long as I have a studio I’ll keep doing this work because it’s fun and it’s a way to help out my dancer friends.
It’s been almost a year since Lindsay came in and we did these photos for her. In fact, it was November 2012. And, yes, that’s how far behind I am with editing my photos. Life has been like that for the past couple years. That’s just one indication of why I had to stop spending a week at a time shooting dance productions at OU. I just can’t seem to keep up any more. Seems like I’m getting a bit old.
Lindsay also does hooping performances. So, after a while the hoops came out and we did some photos with them.
And then Lindsay got really, really tall for a while.
Lindsay brought her friend and fellow performer, Jessica, along for this shoot. Seems Jessica is pretty damn tall at times too.
It’s pretty amazing to see someone that tall dancing around in the studio.
What could you possibly add to all this to make it even more amazing? Why an accordion, of course.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you that photography isn’t fun.
Chicago Reception
September 20th, 2013
I didn’t take a lot of photos at the closing reception of my show at Gallery Provocateur in Chicago earlier this month, but I did play around with the fisheye lens and got a couple that are worth sharing. That’s gallery owner Veronika behind the couch with muses Ayn and Kelsey Dylan flanking my photographer friend Dave Swanson on the couch. The fisheye shows off Veronika’s lovely gallery pretty well. I’ve promised her that I’ll bring it along the next time I’m up there so we can do some shots with it on a tripod and with a low ISO to properly show the gallery.
A couple of my prints are still on the wall at the gallery because Veronika has graciously offered me permanent representation. Soon I’ll be printing up a small portfolio of prints for her to keep on hand to show buyers who visit the gallery. She does such a great job with her gallery and her shows that I’m very pleased and honored to be associated with Gallery Provocateur. And, as you can see, you just never know what might happen at one of her openings.
She has a new show coming up that is connected with Chicago’s fashion week. Another of Veronika’s many talents is as a fashion designer. The next exhibit at the gallery features fashion photography. Click here for the details on the show. She is also having a runway show at the gallery. Click here for details on the runway show.
And, here is one more photo with the fisheye at the opening, featuring the lovely models Ayn and Kelsey cavorting with all of my prints on display in the background. See what you missed.
Good Luck at Starved Rock
September 11th, 2013
As you know if you follow my blog, I’m about a year behind on editing and posting my photos. But today I’m making an exception. After the closing reception for my show at Gallery Provocateur in Chicago I went with some friends to Starved Rock State Park, southwest of the city. It’s one of the most beautiful places on the planet…and a great place to shoot figure work, if you know where and when to do it.
Generally one of the nice things about Starved Rock is that the canyons are so deep and narrow that the sun only reaches into them at mid-day. That makes for nice subdued light. And generally that’s what I’m looking for when I’d doing nudes in nature.
But it pays to pay attention. Sometimes the photo gods will smile on you in unexpected ways. Ayn and I were working on some nice photos near where this one was taken when I noticed this little beam of sunlight hitting the canyon wall in a lovely way. Ayn quickly maneuvered herself into the right spot and did a perfect pose. Her red hair was definitely the right touch for this photo. In a few minutes the light was gone and the canyon was back to its normal subdued look. But I had just enough time to get this shot. I think it will be in my portfolio from now on.
I’ll go back to my normal way behind schedule of posting now. You’ll be seeing some photos from the closing reception soon. But this photo was just too good, at least to my eye, to wait in line to show up here. Thank you Ayn for helping me make what I consider a fine piece of art.
