And now for something completely different…

August 13th, 2007

Sorry I haven’t posted for a few days. We had an old friend visiting and that took up much of my time over the past week. She has returned to her home in NYC now, so I’m getting back to my more or less normal schedule.

This morning I did a shoot that is pretty different from what I have done for the past few years. But, although it may not be apparent from the work I do now, I’ve done just about every kind of photography there is to do over the years, starting as a newspaper photographer in 1968. My degree is in photojournalism and that’s how I earned my living for a number of years before I sold out for jobs that actually offered the possibility of being able to raise a family.

Anyway, a while back I had talked with a model who was also into martial arts about doing a shoot of two women boxing. The idea was to try to capture a good punch landing. It never worked out to do the shoot with that model, but recently I was talking to a friend who works out with a trainer down the hall from my studio. I mentioned that photo idea and she jumped at the chance.

So this morning Karen and her friend/sparring partner Raquel came to the studio along with the trainer/neighbor and they traded punches for a while. We tried to make sure it didn’t get too violent, but some solid punches were landed and I managed to push the shutter button at approximately the right time.
I’m back to editing my last couple months of shooting, so I’ll have more of my usual things to post soon. But I couldn’t resist looking through this morning’s shoot and picking a few to share.
