Ancient Instants
June 4th, 2024
Ancient in a couple ways. These are from a shoot from almost two years ago. That’s how far behind I am with editing. I was making good progress, but then I had some health issues and about the time I was feeling better I went to Cuba for a workshop, and, as you can see in my posts prior to this one, I decided to edit and post the photos from Havana.
But now I’m trying to get back on track with editing. I’m not shooting much these days, so maybe I can catch up.
So, here are some “instant” photos of Carrie and Eden. These two have pretty much been my favorite models for several years now. I love working with both of them and always have great results when they are helping me make art.
And, about that second way these are ancient instants. These were shot on outdated Fuji 3000 “peel-apart” instant film. That film has been discontinued for many years now. It is a real loss to photography that this unique film with a delicious tonal quality is gone forever. I bought all of it that I could find when I heard it was going away.
All the weird stuff you see going on in these is a product of the film just being so old. I suppose I could spend a few days and eliminate those problems, but I guess I don’t see them as problems, but rather the signature of this long-gone film.
There are more photos from this shoot done with a modern digital camera. But I wanted to share these first. The others will be posted here soon.
Cuba Behind the Scenes
June 1st, 2024
I’ve come to the end of my photos from the Steve Anchell Workshop in Havana.
So I’m ending with some behind the scenes photos of the models and some of the workshop leaders and participants.
It was a great workshop with wonderful models and fine leaders. A lot of fun photographing lovely models and seeing Havana.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
April 29th, 2024
Yesterday was Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. As I always do, I made some pinhole photos to mark the day and to submit to the Pinhole Day website.
I like to play around with the unique characteristics of pinholes. This year I decided to try to make an apparent double exposure, but it’s actually a single exposure. I just had my lovely model and friend, Gina, move quickly during the exposure, holding very still before and after the move. The photo above is the most successful of those. The one at the top is in second place. The total exposure was 15 seconds at an ISO of 400.
But the one above here was just a test shot while we were figuring out how this would work. And now both Gina and I are thinking it is the best photo of the lot. This was a 10 second exposure at ISO 400. I can only upload one photo to the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day web gallery. I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning strongly to uploading this last one.
In case you are interested, here’s a photo of the camera I used to make these photos. It’s my trusty Panasonic GX8. The best camera I have every owned. The pinhole is a Pinwide commercially made pinhole with a micro 4/3 mount. I don’t think that pinhole is made anymore. I decided to use the GX8 this year instead of my newer Nikon Z7ii because I like the GX8 better, it has easier to understand and use controls, and it just seemed like a better choice for what I was planning to do. Here’s a photo of the GX8 with the pinhole:
