Another Winner

January 8th, 2016

D70_3909

The winners of the French PHOTO magazine annual contest have just been announced on their website. Once again I’m very pleased to find out that one of my photos has won. They say this is the largest photo contest in the world and certainly there are many thousands of excellent entries, so it’s quite an honor. They seem to like me in France. I’ve a photo selected as a winner almost every time I’ve entered and it has happened so many times now that I’ve lost count. I do know that when I first started entering I had to mail prints to France to be considered. Now, of course, it’s all done on the internet. That, of course, is the winner up above.

Additionally this year I found that 11 of my 12 entries made it through the judging to become finalists. The policy is that only one photo from a photographer can be a winner, so they ended up having to chose just one out of those 11 finalists. I wonder what would happen if I entered some photos under a different name some year…hmmmm.

The winners are all published in the magazine’s January/February issue. It’s usually a couple months before the magazines show up in the US, so I’ll probably do another post when I can show the actual magazine.

And, I have to say that the winner this time is extra special. This beautiful lady has modeled for me since the 1980s. She is a good friend. We did this shoot to mark the occasion of her 50th birthday. She mentioned that doing this photo cost her several strands of that lovely blonde hair, but that it was worth it for the photo. I hope she feels even more that it was worth it now.

My good friend, Dave Rudin, also had one of his photos selected as a winner, so I’ll have extra good company in this magazine.

Here’s the cover of the magazine that has the winners in it:

More Liv in the New Year

January 1st, 2016

DSC_3286_DxO

To get the new year off to a great start here are some new photos of Liv Sage from a shoot late last year.

DSC_3575_DxO

For the photo folk seeing this, these are my second attempt to edit files using DxO Optics Pro. I bought it on sale a couple days ago to see if it will work as a replacement raw converter and editor to get me away from being dependent on Adobe. I have Photoshop CS6 and refuse to be forced into renting my software from Adobe in their new system of directly tapping our wallets every month. I’m fairly impressed with DxO and am thinking it might be the solution I’ve been looking for. It sure is one hell of a lot easier to work with than Lightroom, which I hate with a passion. Given that I’m just getting started with DxO I’m sure these files are not as good as I can get from the software, but working in DxO is easy and simple and the results seem to be better with much less sweat in the process.

One thing I love about Liv…one of a very great many things…is that she laughs at my hopelessly bad jokes. As you can see…

Wishing you all a healthy, happy, peaceful 2016.

Liv In The Dark

December 23rd, 2015

D70_0150

A couple weeks ago I did a shoot with Liv Sage at the studio at night. I got this lighted string a while back and had been waiting for a chance to try it out. So that’s what we did for most of the shoot. I’m still way behind on editing my work, but these are some that Liv picked when she looked at the shoot, so I’m going ahead and sharing them since I’ve edited them for Liv.

I tried playing around with some motion and slow shutter speeds too.

And I did a few shots without the lighted string thing. Liv is such a great model it’s really hard to miss with her in front of the camera.

Liv

December 21st, 2015

D70_8958

It’s, of course, been far too long since I posted here. What can I say…it’s been a rough year. I’ve been sick a lot. The sickest I’ve ever been in my life. I’ll be happy when 2015 is behind me and am hoping for a much better 2016. I’m feeling much better in recent weeks. I’m back on my exercise program and am just about up to the level of fitness that I was trying to maintain before I got sick. It had been more than a year since I was able to work on my exercise program, so this is a very good thing. And I’m feeling much, much better. Hoping it will last.

So, I’m going to try to do regular posts again. I’m more than a year and a half behind on editing the things I’ve shot, so I’m going to work on that and present that work here. I hope to make the blog once again the primary place to display my work. I’ll probably post links to the blog on the social media sites where I hang out instead of posting directly on them. That should make things simpler and avoid all the idiotic rules about nudity on so many sites.

So, recently I’ve been working with a wonderful new model who looked me up and wanted to work with me. Liv Sage is a delightful young lady, a beautiful woman and a talented model. It’s a great pleasure to work with her. And, as you can see here, she does a fantastic job. More of Liv to come.

Another Calendar

October 27th, 2015

Alaska Thumb

I’ve published another calendar. You can click on the cover above to go the page in my on-line store to order a copy. I’ve also added it to the column on the right here. There are no nudes in this calendar. It’s all just snapshots from my trip to Alaska this summer. I’m making no claims that it has great landscape photos, but there are some nice snapshots.

Figure in Nature 2016

Waterfalls 2016

I’ve published a couple new calendars for 2016. They are available in my store on Lulu.com.

The “Figure In Nature” calendar has many of my best photos from over the years. The “Waterfalls” calendar, as you might guess, is all nudes at waterfalls. I seem to shoot too many waterfall photos, so I thought I’d just admit it and put a bunch of them in a calendar.

You can preview the calendars…and, I hope, buy them…at my store. I’ve also added the new calendars, with links, to the column at the right.

Enjoy.

And I have a deal for you. If you order before 11:59 tomorrow, October 26, you can get 30 percent off your order by using the code: OCTFLASH30

W. Eugene Smith Interview

October 18th, 2015

This is a good read. An interview of W. Eugene Smith by Philippe Halsmann done in 1956. Smith was a truly unique individual. I met him once. An interesting person.

Arlo

October 17th, 2015

Last night I saw a wonderful concert by Arlo Guthrie, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant. Really great show. He opened his concert with this video. Probably the worst song lyrics ever, but the video is pretty funny.
