WOW!

WARNING: Photo Geek Post
Santa was very, very good to me. There was a Canon S90 under the tree. If you haven’t been looking at the latest point and shoots, this one has the same 10mp sensor as the G11 and has an f/2 lens (though only at the widest zoom setting) and image stabilization. And, to my surprise it has a feature that I’ve never before encountered in this size camera. When you push the shutter button it takes a photo. No hesitation that is really noticeable, at least to me. That’s a big thing for me.
This is going to replace the old Casio EX-Z750 that has lived in my left front pants pocket for several years now. The Casio is still working, but the image quality is not good enough to let me print anything above about 8×10 from it. There have been times when I got a shot with the Casio that I wanted to print big, but the file just fell apart when it was enlarged.
Anyway, I’ve been just playing with the new Canon taking snaps around the house. I shot this one hand held at the longest tele setting on the zoom, ISO 1600, f/4.9, 1/13. It was on Program with auto color balance. With performance like this at 1600 combined with f/2 and IS…well, I think I’m going to have some fun with this little pocket camera.
END GEEK POST
On another subject, if you’ve been thinking about buying one of my calendars for 2010, the printer is having a sale until the first of the year. Just put in the code: AFTERXMAS when you do your order and you will save 30% off the list price. The calendars are a bit expensive, but that discount makes them a lot more reasonable…so order this week and save money. This is the link to my store:

Congrats on the new camera, DL. I guess Santa likes people with good beards…LOL
Does your camera use AAs or an L-I battery? I need to buy a new digital P&S, and am thinking of a Canon because theirs seem to be the only ones still made with an optical viewfinder. (Of course, I have a Canon now, and I need to get a new one because the battery sensor has broken down!)

L-I battery. No optical viewfinder.
But, the charger is tiny and works on any voltage. I'll buy a second battery and should have plenty of power whereever I go.
I had an optical viewfinder on the old Casio, but found it was so poor and inaccurate that I seldom tried to use it. The screen on this Canon is very bright and seems to be very visible in any light…I'll have to get it out in the direct sun and see how it is, but I think it will be good enough even there.
I don't think there's another pocket-sized camera that comes close to this one in image quality, and that's the most important thing. Short of going to a 4/3 camera, I think this is the one. And a 4/3 isn't really going to fit in the jeans pocket to go everywhere with me.
