Dance Poster

March 1st, 2008

I’m at Ohio University watching rehearsals for next week’s dance concert. I’m extremely pleased to see that the students chose one of the photos I did at their concert last fall to use on the poster, post cards, flyers and program for this concert. It was especially nice to see the 8-foot-tall version of this poster hanging above a street in downtown Athens. I guess they liked the photos.

I always like to see the dances I’m going to be photographing before I actually start taking photos. I’ve been watching the lighting designer work out the light for each dance and taking test exposures and making notes so I’ll know what is the best exposure for each piece and won’t have to try to figure it out while I’m also trying to get photos. Auto exposure doesn’t really work for this kind of situation. I pre-determine the best exposure before hand and set it manually.

Usually the same exposure will work for one entire piece. One piece I saw today is an exception. The lighting went up and down by as much as 3 stops of variation. That one is going to be a challenge when I have to keep manually adjusting the exposure while shooting. But I have notes on when and how much to adjust throughout the piece, so it’s a good opportunity to practice working with controls on the camera quickly and accurately.
